When a ray of white light travels through a cloud of particles, some of that light doesn’t make it through to the other side. Where does it go? Light bounces off the cloud’s molecules many, many times, scattering in all directions. When all colours of light scatter equally, you see a white cloud.

As sunlight travels toward the earth’s surface, it passes through a mixture of gaseous molecules in the atmosphere. Light waves sometimes bounce off these molecules and scatter in many directions. Sunlight is made up of many different colours, but the atmosphere scatters light at the blue end of the spectrum best. Blue light reaches our eyes from all directions, which is why the sky looks blue from the ground and from an airplane.
